National Zoo Keeper Week
Created by AAZK, Inc, National Zoo Keeper Week is celebrated
each year beginning on the third Sunday in July. During the week, zoos
nationwide honor animal care professionals and the work they do in animal care,
conservation, and education. There are
approximately 6,000 animal care professionals in the United States.
To help increase public awareness about the need to preserve our precious habitats and the animals which inhabit them and to recognize the roles that zookeepers play in animal conservation and education, the American Association of Zoo Keepers invites zoos, aquariums, and their guests to participate in National Zoo Keeper Week.
GBAAZK has participated in NZKW for a number of years. Check out some of the fun, games, and other highlights of GBAAZK's involvement and support of the celebration of keepers!

GBAAZK celebrated our careers and all that we do for the animal care profession with a potluck picnic and cornhole tournament!
Monday July 22nd, 5pm-8pm @ Waterfowl Pavilion in Druid Hill Park - The Maryland Zoo
Keepers, aquarists, volunteers, management and friends gathered to play yard games, picnic and hang out. A brief GBAAZK monthly meeting was held in which we voted on a new GBAAZK President- Paul Brandenburger, as Bethany Wlaz stepped down.
GBAAZK would like to thank all who participated in NZKW 2013- as we saw support and involvement from many different departments in both facilities. We cannot thank The Maryland Zoo and National Aquarium enough for their support and appreciation during this week and throughout the year.

To celebrate National Zookeepers Week, GBAAZK sponsored a catered picnic event on Wednesday, July 18th @ the Waterfowl Lake Pavilion.
Saturday, July 23rd GBAAZK ended National Zookeeper Appreciation Week with a little friendly competition in Zookeeper Olympics. Despite the scorching 105 degree day (perhaps hotter), dedicated keepers and volunteers came out to participate in our 3rd annual Olympics. Events included: Zoo Trivia, Keeper Chat Challenge, Keeper Enrichment, ZooTaboo, Bat Round-Up, and Who Scat That? ID. A big thanks to everyone who came out especially our judges, and congratulations to the Yellow Team for the win: Tim Barnett, Marykate Franks, and Dani Beauford!
