Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders
GBAAZK is a founding program in a growing conservation organization known as the Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders or FCSal. Originally known as Chopsticks for Salamanders, FCSal is a 501c3 organization that strives to:
- Disseminate information about the threats to salamanders and their habitats
- Increase awareness about salamander diversity, biology, and conservation
- Raise money for salamander conservation, education, and research
- Fund salamander conservation, education, and/or research initiatives through an annual grant
Chopsticks for Salamanders
Disposable chopsticks are made largely from old growth forests that are clear-cut in the search for the perfect straight-grained wood. Poplar, Spruce, Birch, and Aspen are the most commonly used tree species in disposable chopstick production. Once confined to Asia, this problem is now encroaching on the United States and Canada as well. Currently, one Georgia company exports 2 million disposable chopsticks to China every day. As U.S. forests become more at risk (specifically The Appalachians) a plethora of species are at risk, namely the chosen flagship species, salamanders.
GBAAZK is selling reusable stainless steel chopsticks for $10. They come with a handy travel case and are dishwasher safe. Proceeds will go to The Salamander Fund, which supports salamander conservation, education and research.
