Oscars for the Arctic: Follow the Red Carpet to DogWatch Tavern if you LOVE Polar Bears!

Please join us on Sunday February 26th from 7-11pm at Dogwatch Tavern in Fell's Point for Oscars for the Arctic! The event is being hosted by Greater Baltimore American Association of Zoo Keepers and all funds raised will benefit Trees for You and Me. Trees for You and Me is a program affiliated with Polar Bears International, which is aimed at raising money to plant trees to reduce C02 in the atmosphere and in turn slow global warming. The chief threat to polar bears is the decrease of sea ice due to rising temperatures. Without sea ice polar bears are unable to hunt and thrive in the arctic. For a $10 donation you will receive a ballot to play along with the televised Oscar show, a raffle ticket for great prizes and a wristband that will make you eligible for great food and drink specials. It is sure to be a fun and fabulous night for a GREAT cause. See you there!

SURF VS. TURF
Hopes for a Zoo Three-peat Dashed By a Kickball-Savvy Aquarium Team

August 18th, 2011: The rain came down in buckets and the thunder roared before the kickoff of this year's Surf vs. Turf Kickball Championship. Just as we were losing hope we would be able to play, the skies cleared and the kickball gods smiled down on the field that would witness another epic battle of The National Aquarium in Baltimore vs. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Donning neon green jerseys, the MZiB squad took to the field riding a two-contest win streak. Having prevailed in flag football (2008) and softball (2009) the Zoo was hoping to bring home another "W" to lock up the three-peat. Unfortunately, Team Turf wasn't prepared for the seasoned kickball veterans that comprised Team Surf. The talented feet of the Aquarium were too much to bear as they scored early and often. Team Surf captured the lead in the first inning and never looked back. The last 3 outs were made after the sun had gone down (which is impressive because it was impossible to see the ball at that point) and the Aquarium team had ended all chances of another Zoo win.

The Final: Surf 7- Turf 3. Congratulations, Team Surf!!!!

This year was a huge success for Surf Vs. Turf and regardless of the outcome it was an immense amount of fun. We owe a HUGE "thank you" to Jason Ruby (our honorary referee) and Charlie (the grill master) for donating their time and talents. Next year's event is already in the planning stages so stay tuned for updates.
Thank you all for a great Surf Vs. Turf!!!

We are pleased to announce that our 2010 Animal Art Auction was a huge success, thanks to YOU!! GBAAZK was able to raise $2,000.

This year, we had 53 pieces of art work for auction including animal "footprints" and "body paintings" as well as photographs, sculptures and other home decor decorated by some of the zoo's very own animals and staff! There were games, food and prizes enjoyed by all and let's not forget the special guest appearances by some of the zoo's animal ambassadors!

Each year our event grows and we hope to see you at our 2011 Art Auction event!
