AAZK is a nonprofit (U.S. 501c3) volunteer organization made up of zoo keepers and other interested persons dedicated to professional animal care and conservation. The purpose of our Greater Baltimore AAZK chapter is to promote the profession of 'animal keeper' and to aid various conservation programs through our activities. GBAAZK is a group affiliated with The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Founded in 1876, The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is the third oldest zoo in the United States and is internationally known for its conservation and research contributions. The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) , assuring excellent care for animals, a great experience for visitors, and a better future for all living things. We are very proud to help uphold the zoo's mission to inspire and educate people, lending support toward the conservation of wild life and wild places. July 19-25, 2009 was National Zoo Keeper Week! Our chapter celebrated by hosting our very own "Zookeeper Olympics!" Staff members from all areas of the zoo teamed up to battle it out in a series of fun activites based on different aspects of a zoo keeper's job. We were enriched like chimps, fed like penguiuns, rounded up like chickens, and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to all who supported and participated in these events. ![]() GBAAZK kicked off 2009 with "Party for the Penguins" as their first fundraiser. The event was held in downtown Annapolis at The Federal House Bar and Grill. Proceeds from "Party for the Penguins" were raised for SANCCOB, The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Seabirds. SANCCOB is a world recognized leader in rehabilitating oiled sea birds, particularly the African Penguin. The event raised awareness about the quickly diminishing number of African Penguins. ![]() We are proud to recognize the enormous contribution SANCCOB has made to help conserve this species. With a $5 donation to SANCCOB, guests could enjoy music and several food and drink specials. In addition, a Behind the Scenes to visit the African Penguin exhibit at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore was auctioned off, along with animal artwork, and a Maryland Zoo membership. With the collaborative efforts from GBAAZK, The Maryland Zoo, and The Federal House, $650 was raised for SANCCOB. The event was a huge success, and we look forward to working with The Federal House again for future fundraisers and events.
